Fine CHAIRity at the Worcester Center for CraftsThe Worcester Center for Crafts continues it’s exploration of America’s multi-faceted arts and crafts world with its first major exhibition of 2002, “THE CHAIR”, featuring the work of 27 professional artists from the U.S., Canada, and Australia. 30 chairs have been juried and selected by one of America’s well-known artist-craftsmen and makers of fine furniture, Sam Maloof. Maloof, who has been making furniture since 1948, was recently honored with a retrospective of his work at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. “Sam is known for emphasizing three aspects in his designs: the eye, the hand and the heart,” says Regina Stillings, the Craft Center’s marketing director. “The selected artisans entered pieces that successfully incorporate these elements. Each chair is unique, ranging from traditional styles to fun and whimsical.” “The variety of work being displayed is exciting and inspiring,” says Maryon Attwood, executive director. “From “rowboat” inspired chairs to benches to those incorporating cloth, fabrics, leather & “stained glass”, these chairs must be seen to be believed!” Opening reception for the exhibit is Saturday, October 12 from 6-8 p.m., and the exhibit runs through November 23. A catalog of this exhibition will be available by the opening date of October 12. For more information, call (508) 753-8183 or visit www.worcestercraftcenter.org |
