The Corner Grille is a very Pleasant place

Menu for Two
Thai vegetable wrap, chicken pesto pizza, lemon drinks, rice crispy squares: $17.53 with tax

Really good soup served in a comfortable, low-key atmosphere. Unusual sandwiches made with quality ingredients like grilled fresh vegetables with Thai rice, real steak wrapped in garlic cheese, true turkey with cranberry and harvest grain fruit rice – even stuffed grapeleaves wrapped up with tomato, onion, crumbled feta....yum! And superb pizzas: sweet tomato and basil, chicken pesto, chicken caeser and greek pizza made with thin, crispy Neapolitan-style crusts and served hot, hot.

What more do you need for a really good place to eat lunch?

The Corner Grille, located at the artsy intersection of Worcester’s Pleasant Street and Richmond Avenue, has carved out a niche as one of the few places where you can get a really good meal – especially lunch - for less than $10. Heck, most of the sandwiches and wraps cost around $5. And even the smallest pizza pies are so big — 14 inches square - that it’s hard to believe the average cost is around $8.

As a matter of fact, when our scrumptious, sizzling, chicken pesto pizza was delivered to our table, I said to my companion, “THAT is a SMALL???”

We devoured every bite of the pizza, even though we also shared a Thai Veggie Wrap – a big, soft roll of grilled seasonal vegetables, Thai black rice with peanuts and red peppers and spicy tamarind sauce. And we even had room for one of The Corner Grille’s tasty desserts, which on that day included harvest fruit bars, rice crispy squares and cookie and cream bars.

Washed down with imported lemon drinks in cool, solid blue glass bottles, this oh so pleasant lunch cost us both just $17.53. And we didn’t feel stuffed, just comfortably satisfied.

The Corner Grille may not be huge — there is room in the cool, high-ceilinged, turn-of-the century style dining area for just 20 people at cosy wooden tables covered in black and white checked cloths — but it sure delivers big results. The restaurant’s wonderful old pressed tin ceiling, large framed 1920s vintage posters and brightly colored, blackboard-style menus add to the charm of the place.

And when you leave, you can get some take-out treats for dinner like fresh chick pea or pasta salads, spinach flat pies, green salads and homemade soups. When we were there, the take-out soup choices included chicken lemon rice (which we hear is to die for), vegetarian lentil, creamy broccoli and white bean escarole — not a bad selection, especially for the middle of August.

We hear that The Corner Grille also makes superb Shepherd and chicken pot pies. We’ll be back soon to sample those seasonal treats – and maybe to build our own pizza, which can include just about any topping you’re hankering for, from artichokes to eggplant to pineapple.
