Struck Café strikes a new deal: The Struck Café, which has been located on Chandler Street for about 25 years, will be moving to a new location around the first of the year. But all you foodies on the West Side won't have to worry, because the Struck isn't moving very far. In fact it's just moving down the street about 200 yards, across from the Tatnuck Bookseller.
Take away: If you like the food at Romaine's in Northboro, you are in for some good news. According to Richard Romaine, chef/owner, the eatery will be opening a take out version just down the street from the current location. Now you won't have to wait for a table to sample Richard's great food.
Speculation on Shrewsbury Street: Nick Fiorello, late of the Crystal Palace and the Palladium, is rumored to have recently purchased the 20,000 square foot "Airline Lewis" building on Shrewsbury Street. The speculation is that Fiorello is opening a club or leasing the space to a restaurant. There is also speculation that Peter Tsigas, who owns Café Neo on Millbury Street, is interested in opening a nightclub at the site of the old Lawless Cadillac Building, also on Shrewsbury Street.
More Shrewsbury Street rumors....word has it that Stefano's, a popular East Side restaurant located on Grafton Hill, has been sold. Stephen and Debbie Caligaris have been looking around for a new location. One spot we heard they looked at was the new building being built next to Dunkin Donuts on Shrewsbury Street.
Pool Parties: Boston Billiards has recently undergone a spiffy, substantial make-over celebrated at a recent opening attended by several hundred well-wishers. The crowd enjoyed a pretty sumptuous buffet and free beverages as they cruised around a renovated private function room, a new lounge and a café. Oh, did I mention there are also new pool tables....
Good Q: Fireflys Bar-B-Que located at 350 East Main Street in Marlboro, will be opening a second location near Routes 12 & 20 in Auburn around the first of the year. Under the direction of Chef/Owner Steve Uliss, Fireflys recently won a couple of awards in the New England Barbecue Championship. If you like really good Q, you won't have to drive to Marlboro anymore.
Looking for a new place afterwork? Lola's Lounge, an upscale after work club, is looking to open on Main Street across from The Owl Shop. Lola's is the brainchild of Drew Stoddard a recent Clark University graduate who believes in Worcester's potential for attracting the young professional crowd.
Caffene BUZZZ: The rumors you've heard brewing are true. Starbucks is coming. That's right -- Worcester will be getting its first Starbucks shortly! The premium yuppie coffee purveyor is slated to open a store on Grove Street in a proposed building on the site were Peking Wok used be. Can a Krispy Kreme be far behind?
Tapas anyone? Tapas, the Spanish finger food usually eaten at bars while you are standing up, have been showing up on area restaurant menus. These little appetizers first appeared at Tiano's several months ago. Now the savvy folks at 111 Chophouse are handing out tapas. Ole!
Please keep the cheeseburgers & chili! As has been widely reported throughout the city, Ralph Moberly recently signed a deal with Vincent Hemmeter, formerly chief barkeep at famed Ralphs and now owner of Vincent's on Suffolk Street. In a true counter-culture move, not surprising for those who know him well, Vincent is taking over Ralphs, which has become one of the city's prime venues for live music and good food. We hope Vincent will keep the good burgers and chili coming.
