The Edgemere returns: Worcester is a famous diner city and the news is that the classic Edgemere Diner on Route 20 in Shrewsbury is now open on Friday nights. There are reportedly added menu items, such as fish and chips and prime rib. The diner, now under the ownership of Barbara Sundeen, is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and until noon on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Tavern on the Common opens: The Tavern on the Common in Rutland recently opened its doors at 249 Main Street in the Common Plaza. The restaurant offers a limited menu, with a full menu coming soon. Call 508-886-4600 for more information.
Women in Wine fundraiser: Several well know California women vintners including Kate McMurray of McMurray Ranch Vineyard and Maureen Lalonis from Lalonis Winery will join local women in the hospitality industry such as Ellen Brigham of Austin Liquors, Rhonda Aspinall of Perennial’s, Susan Lawrence of Pepper’s Fine Food and Maureen Gagnon of Yankee Spirits at a special benefit party for Abby’s House in May. The event will be held at the Publick House in Sturbridge at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 16 and will feature a tasting as well as a live auction. Tickets are $125. A sad goodbye to Henri’s Confectionery: This bakery and café, which was owned by Kim Lofgren, the former pastry chef at the Whistling Swan Restaurant in Sturbridge and Robert Siegel has apparently has closed its doors. The bakery, at 372 Chandler Street, served high quality desserts that Lofgren was well known for at the Swan.
Lucky’s in business: Lucky’s Café, a popular Grove Street mainstay, is open and is once again serving dinner on Friday and Saturday nights from 5 to 9 p.m., as well as breakfast, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. On Saturdays, Lucky’s is open from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for breakfast and lunch. According to Peter Amer, one of the owners, ”Lucky’s is open”. The intimate, bistro-style spot featuring home-made fare in the lower level of the historic Washburn building on Grove Street is BYOB.
Tapas in the Canal District: Kerry Boyd, a manager at Shrewsbury Street’s Flying Rhino Café will be leaving the Rhino to open up a tapas restaurant at 157 Harding Street in the Canal District.
Sonoma receives big award: Sonoma, the much-acclaimed restaurant in Princeton, has received a DiRoNa Award (A Distinguished Restaurant of North America Award) for 2004. Under the ownership of Bill Brady, Sonoma has consistently received rave reviews far and wide.
