Rare Steakhouse at Waterfront Mary's

The Best New Waterfront Getaway is Closer Than You Think

September 2005 - On one of those picture perfect summer evenings, a friend and I ventured 15 minutes south of Worcester to the new RARE fine dining restaurant at the newly remodeled Waterfront Mary’s in Webster.

The short drive took us to what felt like a mini-vacation. Located directly on Webster Lake, the spankin’ new restaurant is a multi-level facility with multiple decks overlooking the lake. A waterfront pub-style area spills out onto a large wraparound deck with a cabana and a frozendrink Tiki Bar, complete with the sexy beach club crowd you’d expect.

But it was to the fine dining rooms that we were headed, so ~ passing the upstairs
upscale bar overlooking the water and showcasing a wall of windows and stunning Victorian mahogany bar ~ we took our seats in the hip, upstairs room.

While sitting at our table and perusing the varied menu, we ordered Smirnoff-raz and tonic and a Bass from the full bar, taking in the jet-skis and pontoon boats docked outside the windows two floors below.

After choosing our entrees, we started in on the appetizers we’d selected, the Tenderloin Tips, large squares of marinated beef resting on a creamy blue cheese risotto. This came personally served and split into two by our server and was in itself a small meal well-prepared.

Attempting to avoid total gluttony but realizing that sampling the full menu was a must, we chose to share the BLT + G Salad ~ again accommodatingly split into two portions onto two separate beveled ceramic plates. The salad was a pile of crispy mesculin greens with fresh crumbled bacon chips, a smooth vinaigrette and a perfect crumbled goat cheese – we were off to a very nice start.

Before the arrival of the entrees, twilight began creeping in and the room started to glow with hand blown glass lamps while Webster Lake turned a pale lavender in the moonlight. My guest dove into his salmon entrée, a large filet served over a bed of corn risotto on a confettidecorated plate. My stuffed veal chop was crammed full of a fantastic bleu cheese spinach stuffing sitting atop an elegant stack of herb mashed potatoes with a summer selection of zucchinis on the side.

We each followed all this succulence with a latte’-sized cup of fresh coffee and turned our attention to the desserts. Taking our server’s suggestion, we both chose the Lemoncello, an oversized torte-style cake with a raspberry center, an almost-fudgy lemon crème topping, a citrus glaze and creamy shaved white chocolate flakes – as wonderful as it sounds.

Waterfront Mary’s is so much more than you’d expect. It’s hard to know what to rave about first, the setting, the eclectic range of dining and drinking options, the view, or the expert, friendly and gracious service (thanks to our waitress Sandy, she was wonderful). The new owners have clearly poured their hearts and souls into a wonderful new dining option for not only Webster but for all of Central MA. It’s truly nice to know that what feels like a complete weekend getaway can be had in only one afternoon or evening with an only 10 or 15 minute drive from Worcester.

Don’t let the season slip by without heading to the waterfront. All your senses will thank you!
