Curl up this Valentine's Day with popcorn and a movie

February 2005 - Sappy movies just aren’t my thing. Romantic comedies, though — that’s a different story! Here are a few suggestions to set the mood for a quiet Valentine’s evening at home.

You’ve Got Mail (1998; PG)

Have you ever considered an online relationship? If you have, you know it may not always work out, but You’ve Got Mail offers an adorable account of anonymous love. With friendly banter and ironic situations, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are at their cutest and funniest in this flick.

When Harry Met Sally (1989; R)
A Meg Ryan classic! When Harry Met Sallytells the opposite of a love-at-first-sight story, following the relationship of Sally Albright (Ryan) and Harry Burns (the hilarious Billy Crystal) as it blossoms from their first awkward meeting into friendship and love. The scene in the diner is a comedy classic, and I just burst out laughing every time. I also love the vignettes of the couples telling stories of how they met. I guarantee this movie will make you smile.

50 First Dates (2004; PG-13)
Before I saw this Adam Sandler comedy, I would’ve recommended The Wedding Singer, which first paired him with Drew Barrymore. In 50 First Dates, Henry (Sandler) falls in love with Lucy (Barrymore), a lovable girl who has lost her short-term memory and can’t remember anything from the previous day. Lunacy ensues as he goes to hilarious lengths to “meet” Lucy day after day.

Four Weddings and a Funeral(1994; R)
In this delightful comedy, Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell play wedding guests whose paths cross, but never at the right time. Charles’s (Grant) friends all seem to be marrying at the same time, forcing him to think about settling down. However, just when he thinks he’s met the perfect woman, Carrie (MacDowell), he discovers his timing is all wrong. Though this movie has more than enough sappy moments, the British humor will save you from drowning in a sea of tissues.
