There’s Bad News and There’s Good News...

January 2006 -
What is the New Year without some changes? I’m proud to be the one to inform all you devoted club goers that, as of January 8th, 2006, you’ll have to say goodbye to Rage. *GASP!!!!* I know ~ but fear not, my fine friends, it will be resurrected. I was able to sit down with Rage owner (and official spokesman of the Worcester Gay Pride Association) Tim Desantis and plead with him to give me the whole scoop. So here it is: RAGE IS DEAD. Now, hold on a minute! Breathe, stretch, shake. Okay. Allow me to rephrase. Rage and the Mining Company aren’t actually dead, they’re just turning BLU - BLU Ultralounge & Nightclub, that is.
While Worcester has been home to other gay clubs like Club 241 and A-Men, I’m sure we can all agree that Rage was the one that helped pull the city’s historically quiet gay community out from the shadows. Rage’s presence on Water Street has been felt for almost three solid years, and Tim Desantis is proud to have been a part of it. “I am very proud of what Rage is, and what I am sure it will be remembered for. Everybody has a club that they associate with a certain period in their lives, and I am sure Rage will be that club for many people. But I also think that Rage was more than just a social club that happened to be popular. I think that Rage helped to produce huge strides in the gay community in general.”
And while the club itself is undergoing many changes, do not, I repeat DO NOT, make the mistake of thinking that Rage is simply getting a face-lift. The closing of Rage marks the end of an era and its resurrection will represent a new beginning. You’re probably saying to yourself,” What the hell could ever rival the awesome times had at Rage?” The even more awesome times that will be had at BLU, that’s what!
BLU, while still an alternative lifestyles nightclub, will be vastly different from Rage. Desantis, as always, has put his heart and soul into the project. Not kidding around about turning his new place into nighclub royalty, he has enlisted the help of an entertainment venue heavy hitter; John Taffer, owner of the Rainforest Café and the designer behind Walt Disney’s Pleasure Island, is now closely involved and consulting on the project.
The concept of Mr. Desantis’s and Mr. Taffer’s creation is best described as trendy and hip. Not good enough for all of you picky people? Then here are a few more adjectives for the list: chic, sexy, sophisticated, and suave. OK, you want specifics? BLU will have a slightly stricter dress code than Rage did. No more headwear or T-shirts, and all males must wear collared shirts. And, except for Wednesdays (which will remain 18+), all nights are for the 21+ crowd. Oh, and did I forget to mention the FREE BUFFET? Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, Tim invites you all down to relax after work with some light live music, appetizers, cocktails, and yes, the free buffet. Alright, are you done relaxing now? GOOD. Because after the nice cocktail/appetizer hour it’s time for the dance parties ~ Wednesdays through Sundays, JUST LIKE ALWAYS.
So, get out your calendars, everyone. Here are a few dates you won’t want to miss!! *JANUARY 7th, Rage Farewell Party (18+) * JANUARY 8th: QUEERS IN REVIEW, Rage’s monthly cabaret show, will be celebrating with the BEST of 2005 on that final night of Rage’s reign.* Then (drum roll)…BLU Ultralounge & Nightclub GRAND OPENING ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2006.
Can’t wait to see you all there!
