05.12 The Leather Jacket ~ Not Just for Bad Boys (and Girls) Anymore
By Courtney Danielson
There’s nothing cooler than a leather jacket ~ and this season, both men’s and women’s fashion is making a departure from the standard black rock-n-roll uniform and moving towards more neutral tones and a more sophisticated look. The styles are a bit more tailored and fitted than the leather biker jackets of yore, but can still pack a rough punch when paired up with the perfect piece.
For inspiration from some of today’s most fashion-forward singers who’ve made the iconic heavy metal band jacket their own, keep reading!
Style Inspiration: Zooey Deschanel
The music Zooey Deschanel is known for is quite similar to her personal style ~ it’s got an old-school feel with just enough of a current undertone to keep you from feeling like you’ve just discovered time travel. To sweeten up the look of our leather jacket and make it work for Zooey’s style, it should be paired with a 1950s inspired, full-skirt dress (ideally with some polka-dots!) and black ballet flats.
Style Inspiration: Rihanna
This Barbadian beauty is no stranger to wearing leather ~ in the form of a jacket, pants, arm warmers, and (we’re just guessing), even undergarments! She is the epitome of today’s rock-star style. Our nude colored jacket is a bit too prim and proper for Rihanna’s normal attire, but paired with on-trend neon pants (hot pink, anyone?), a sheer, flowy black tank top, and some strappy black stilettos, this piece quickly becomes part of an edgy look.
Style Inspiration: Michael Buble
Michael Buble’s music is reminiscent of Frank Sinatra and The Rat Pack, and his style follows suit – literally. He generally performs in a full suit and always looks decidedly dapper. Off-stage, Michael’s “casual” look could pass for some guys’ black-tie, and our leather jacket can add just the right touch of today to his old-world charm. By pairing this tailored leather jacket with dark denim jeans (which should be perfectly tailored and slim fit) and a gray t-shirt, Michael’s sticks to his style philosophy by dressing to the nines for every occasion.
Style Inspiration: Keith Urban
Country crooner Keith Urban makes looking casual, devastatingly handsome, and boy-next-door charming seem effortless. By mixing our leather jacket with a pair of light-wash distressed denim, a worn (but not ratty!) dark t-shirt, and perhaps a pair of cowboy boots, he perfects the casual-but-kempt look.
So take a fashion cue from these celebs and make the leather jacket work for you!
